In 2013, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and the people of Davao constructed the monument of no regret as a sign of the long history of friendship between Davao and Japan.

In the 20th century, there was once large community of the Japanese in Davao that flourished through the Abaca industry. When World War II broke out, everything was destroyed and it brought nothing but tragedy. After the tragic result of the war, the Japanese immigrants of pre-war Davao come and visit their hometown, their place of birth.

In 21st century, the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai and the Japan Philippine Volunteer Association join hands together to be able to build a new relationship between the two countries, Philippines and Japan.

"Every human being is my brother, my sister, my child."

- Rodrigo R. Duterte
