Despite the fact that Philippines belongs in a third world country, many Filipinos, especially in Davao City, work hard for a sustainable living. While many big businesses are emerging rapidly in key cities, like Davao City, small businesses in stalls are also evident and are mostly visible along the streets. Most locations that small businesses are found are near schools, churches, malls and other public offices.

Some vendors can testify that because of their small business, they can send their children to school since goods are affordable which give them a good return of income. Davaoenos are fond of retail (per piece) instead of bulk purchases. Most products that small businesses offer are affordable for the reason that it is sold by piece. Because of this, people really patronize it that keeps them coming back to purchase more. For instance, instead of dining in the fine restaurant, why not go out in the street and have some quick bite experience.

This is one of the reasons why many tourists appreciate the hardwork of Filipinos. We always smile despite the problem and most especially when there is calamity. We believe that “habang may buhay, may pag-asa”.

Below are some of my snapshots along the street of Davao City. With the vendor’s permission, I was able to take photos of their stalls. A picture is never perfect without a smile of course.

To be continued....
