Aside from Kadayawan Festival, which is very famous not only in the Philippines but also outside the country, Davao City also celebrates the prestigious “Araw ng Dabaw”. Dabawenyos flock the main thoroughfares of downtown area to witness the parade of different groups, tribes, and some celebrity appearances, to rejoice and commemorate the creation of Davao City. The celebration also highlights the bountiful harvest of our farmers.
Major events also highlight the celebration like Mutya ng Dabaw where talented young Dabawenyas showcase their beauty, talents, and brains to get the crown. As part of the festival, Datu Bago Awards are given to important people who had contributed to the development of Davao City.
Many tourists across the country and “balikbayans” witness the yearly celebration of Araw ng Dabaw.
The city was joyously inaugurated in March 1, 1937 with Hon. Elpidio Quirino, then the Secretary of Interior as President Quezon’s representative in the celebration program. When the City of Davao began on March 1, 1937, its population was listed at about 68,000. By 1940 it increased to 98,000. By 1945,despite the toll and dispersion caused by the Japanese invasion in December 1941, the city’s population by estimate in 1946 increased to 111,263. In the census of 1960, population figure doubled to 227,635. In 1970, this rose to 750,000. (Population estimates by officials and business sector). - Source: www.davaocity.gov.ph
Davao City today is already changing the landscape in terms of business development. More high-rise buildings were constructed and other businesses. Despite of this development, Davao City retains its reputation to be one of the non-polluted city in the country. Proofs of these are the comments from social networking site and every individual who already visited the city. Fair treatment between tribes is one of the agenda being highlighted by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
This year, Davao City will be in the spot light in celebrating this yearly event. More tourists from locals and internationals will be in Davao to celebrate this event.
